CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN BUSINESS

In chapter 3, I have learned about culture.  So this time i just want to share to all readers about an article that i have read.  The article is about cultural differences in business.  From the article that i have read, the writer focus on cultural differences in communication and in valuing time before briefly touching on some general guidelines which are worth observing regardless of all cultural differences.

Cultural differences in Communication

From my reading, the author states that there are huge cultural differences in communication between people from one country to another.During business meetings, cultural differences in communication may come to the fore. so it is important to keep an eye on this.cultural differences in communication are influenced by hierarchy. Therefore every decision made in the meeting is by senior business partners. We need to show respect to them by acknowledging their status, otherwise it will leave a bad impression.

Cultural differences in Valuing time

For valuing time, the authors stress that cultural differences in time is more to timeliness. Many countries are very concerned about the accuracy of the time but is different in every way. some countries are giving employees the flexibility to slow in the meeting but some countries are very strict on punctuality. Therefore, when we go to a country, we need to adhere to the timeliness practiced by a culture of the country.

COLLECTIVISM VS INDIVIDUALISM

What is the differences between Individualism and Collectivism?

Individualism is a belief that everyone needs to look after themselves and support themselves

Collectivism is a value or belief where you think of society first and what societies needs are. You make sacrifices for the benefit of society as a whole instead of thinking only of yourself.

In chapter 2, I have learned about collectivism and individualism.  This sub topic, attract me to know which one is better.  So i have read a few of article about this collectivism and individualism and i found that, it is depends on person's view on this sub topic.  Some said , they prefer indiviualism and some said they prefer collectivism.  If you asked me, I will choose collectivism because it emphasizes group goals which meant they will work together not individually.  I think we are better off if we are all working together.

In short, collectivism creates power.  If you trust everyone ,then collectivism is great otherwise if even one person goes bad, collectivism creashed hard. And by the way, even if you believe people are generally good at heart ,collectivism is not a good bet.  For it to work, you cannot just believe that people are generally good at heart, you have to believe that all people are always good at heart and always know how to be good.

My View of the Good and Bad of Globalization

Globalization is the process of increased interconnectedness among countries most notably in the areas of economics, politics, and culture.  From my reading about this globalization, this globalization has improved the technology in transportations and communications.  This is because nowadays, a phone, instant message, fax, or video conference call can easily be used to connect people.  There is no border barriers to people connect each other in the world.

Globalization also increased movement of capital and people.  People get a new job, a new home as a result of the prescribed minimum wage than before setting a minimum wage that can be given to employees, they have to work hard for subsistence life.

Globalization also increased diffusion of knowledge.  It is about what any new found knowledge does.  However  this globalization has good and bad.  My view about the good of globalization is, this globalization makes everything in the world become easy, creative and inovative.  This is because people have many choices in their life such as clothing, food, movies and more. This globalization also gives benefit to people in rising their living standards.  The globalization makes world becomes creative and inovative because of the global competition.

However, globalization also has negative impact.  In my reading, the bad of globalization is it can  takes away those jobs from another country, leaving many without opportunities because of outsourcing.  Globalization also gives impact on cultures which when they able to interact, they begin to meld and contours and individuality of each culture begin to fade.  The international regulation gives bad effect to safety of people and environment.

So from my reading about the bad n good of the globalization is there is such a good things do this globalization because it change the world trend.  However the bad of globalization is not a barriers because it be can control as much as can to prevent that is not largely affected the globalization.

GLOBALIZATION

What is mean by the globalization?

Globalization can be defined as the process of international integration arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture.

My view on this topic is globalization may result in changes to the world in terms of technology, communication, transportation and more.  Many parties gain an advantage in the globalization.  However , from my reading i found that globalization have good and bad.  Roughly we see globalization provides benefits to all parties but in fact it is there negative aspects of globalization.  Following is the positive and negative aspects of globalization.

POSITIVE ASPECT

  • As more money is poured in to developing countries, there is a greater chance for the people in those countries to economically succeed and increase their standard of living.
  • Global competition encourages creativity and innovation and keeps prices for commodities/services in check.
  • Developing countries are able to reap the benefits of current technology without undergoing many of the growing pains associated with development of these technologies.
  • Governments are able to better work together towards common goals now that there is an advantage in cooperation, an improved ability to interact and coordinate, and a global awareness of issues.
  • There is a greater access to foreign culture in the form of movies, music, food, clothing, and more. In short, the world has more choices.

NEGATIVE ASPECT

  • Outsourcing, while it provides jobs to a population in one country, takes away those jobs from another country, leaving many without opportunities.
  • Although different cultures from around the world are able to interact, they begin to meld, and the contours and individuality of each begin to fade.
  • There may be a greater chance of disease spreading worldwide, as well as invasive species that could prove devastating in non-native ecosystems.
  • There is little international regulation, an unfortunate fact that could have dire consequences for the safety of people and the environment.
  • Large Western-driven organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank make it easy for a developing country to obtain a loan. However, a Western-focus is often applied to a non-Western situation, resulting in failed progress.
